Independent Living Activities: Enjoy a Vibrant, Active Lifestyle

Independent living allows older adults to engage in various activities that cater to their interests and encourage a healthy, social, and fulfilling lifestyle. Whether you enjoy staying physically active, exploring creative outlets, or simply spending time with fellow residents, there’s something for everyone. From fitness classes to game nights, the activities on our campus are designed to keep the mind and body sharp while fostering a sense of community.

Many of these activities are shared or overlap with those offered to our Harvest View community members, which is our personal care community on campus. This creates opportunities for independent living residents to engage with a broader group of neighbors during crafting, live music performances, and special meals. By fostering connections across the community, we ensure that all residents can enjoy a rich, inclusive lifestyle filled with meaningful interactions and shared experiences.

Stay Physically Active with Engaging Classes

Maintaining physical activity is essential to independent living, and our campus provides plenty of opportunities to stay fit and healthy. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning, a group of residents gathers for Sit and Get Fit, an energizing yet gentle exercise class designed to strengthen arms, legs, and core muscles. This DVD-led class is an excellent way to kick off the day while connecting with others who prioritize wellness.

We offer Chair Yoga on Tuesday afternoons for those who enjoy a more structured fitness routine. This class is tailored to accommodate all skill levels and is led by a professional instructor who brings enthusiasm and expertise to each session. Residents rave about the benefits of Chair Yoga, from improved flexibility to a sense of relaxation and mindfulness.

In addition to these classes, our line dancing class every Monday afternoon keeps residents moving to the beat. This lively activity fosters fitness and fun, whether held indoors during the winter or outside in the warmer months. One of our talented residents even leads the group, making it a cherished event on the calendar.

Creative and Intellectual Pursuits

Numerous activities exist for those who love expressing their creativity or engaging their minds. Residents participate in a craft class on select Fridays to create unique projects. In February, for instance, participants will craft Valentine’s Day cards to share with their fellow residents—a heartfelt gesture that combines creativity with community care.

Residents who enjoy literature or meaningful discussions can look forward to Bible Study sessions in the Community Building twice a month. These gatherings provide a space to connect over shared beliefs and foster deeper relationships with fellow residents.

Additionally, Wednesdays offer a chance for residents to work on collaborative projects like quilting. A small but dedicated group regularly enjoys the satisfaction of creating something beautiful while sharing stories and laughter.

Social Activities for Connection and Fun

Independent living activities are enriched by the opportunity to connect with others, and our community offers a wide range of social activities to make that happen. Every Monday afternoon, residents gather to play Hand and Foot, a card game that brings excitement and camaraderie. Similarly, the Dealer’s Choice group convenes on Tuesday afternoons to decide which game to play, ensuring weekly variety and fun.

For those who enjoy group outings, Fridays are a highlight. On the first Friday of the month, a group of men meets for breakfast at a local restaurant—a great way to start the day with good food and conversation. Ladies enjoy their monthly outing on the second Friday, heading to a favorite local spot for lunch.

Beyond routine activities, the community also plans special events. For instance, February brings a Secret Pal Banquet, where participants reveal their identities and celebrate a year of thoughtful gift-giving. This event is a cherished tradition, fostering lasting bonds and setting the stage for a new year of surprises.

Group Activities That Build Community

Independent living wouldn’t be complete without events that bring everyone together. From movie nights with freshly popped popcorn from our own popcorn machine to seasonal outings for ice cream, the activity calendar is packed with ways to connect and enjoy shared experiences.

Monthly lunches, such as the Lunch on Us event, provide a unique opportunity for residents to gather and enjoy a delicious meal in a lively atmosphere. These moments of fellowship are more than just meals—they’re a chance to create lasting memories with neighbors and friends.

Residents also enjoy regular performances from talented musicians, allowing everyone to relax and soak in live entertainment. These performances are always well-loved, and that joy is one of the most exciting parts of our independent living activities.
